Sweet vs. Salt of the Earth

I once heard a speaker talking about those who only want to hear smooth things being spoken to them in correlation to us being the salt of the earth.. The point made was that while many want sweet (or smooth) things spoken to them, what they usually do with the salt when they want something sweet? They spit it out.

That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD:  (10)  Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:  (11)  Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.
Isaiah 30:9-11

But..

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.  (14)  Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.  (15)  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Matthew 5:13-15

We are called to be the light of the earth. I’d say it’s time we start striving for that.

  1. Salt is also sterile in a solution of water, just an interesting fact.
It can be used to clean and disinfect. But salt without water when applied to a wound is bad news. Ever heard of putting rock salt in shotgun shells as a less-than-lethal load? When you get hit with something like that, you remember. We are told clearly that we are the salt of the Earth, so what then is the water? I believe that it is the Holy Spirit – the life-giving water.

Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
    (Exodus 17:6 KJV)

But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
    (John 19:34 KJV)

And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
    (Revelation 21:6 KJV)

And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
    (Revelation 22:1 KJV)

    • Without the Holy Spirit we cannot fully heal just as with without the Holy Spirit we cannot help heal others.
Salt also cannot be moved without flowing waters.
By that I mean that we can’t really do a lot without the water, which is the Holy Spirit.
